We stayed 2 nights here primarily to break our return journey from the eastern Kavango region to Windhoek and to experience their white rhinos on foot. The main building dates back to 1895 and green lawns and stately palms are enclosed by a low stone wall. With its location in the Otavi mountains, Ghaub is peaceful and away from it all with amazing sunsets, sunrises and night skies. We had 2 large rooms with a terrace – spacious and comfortable. Staff were friendly and the chef produced some excellent desserts. My husband, adult son and daughter did the morning walk to the rhinos. The guide offered to take them to the other rhinos about 12km away as well, but the group declined because it was getting hot. I’d planned to walk, but had an upset stomach from malaria pills, and chose the afternoon drive instead. The vegetation was a mixture of thorn bushes and then opened up onto a grassy plain where we saw springbok, red hartebees, zebras, bush buck, and a dikdik, not to mention a group of rhinos. The guide told us we could get out and approach them, keeping a distance, since they are accustomed to people and would have walked up to us. The different groups of rhinos are protected around the clock by ONE Namibia (they also protect the rhinos at Waterberg). We saw the night guard take over from the day guard as he completed his shift. Fabulous experience. There is nothing quite like seeing a rhino in the wild to truly appreciate it, especially the more gentle white rhinos. Our guide drove us across the reserve to see the other rhinos as well and once again we were able to leave the vehicle and approach them on foot. We can highly recommend this encounter and appreciate that revenue from these tours go to support the rhino patrol. Recommend at least 2 nights at Ghaub.

This lovely farm outside Grootfontein has lots of game roaming around and is very peaceful. Right behind our campsite there was a little hike up to “lion king rock” - which had a stunning view over the fields and forests below. We only stayed here one night, but I think you could definitely stay for 2 because they have lots of hiking routes and they can take you to see their rhinos by game vehicle or by foot (if you didn’t get lucky and see them in Etosha like we did). Very lovely place and a bit sad we couldn’t stay longer. The private campsites with their own kitchen and bathroom areas are a nice bit of luxury, and we loved how spacious it was.

Let me start with - don't go to this place. There was no a/c and you couldn't keep the windows open at night because there were no screens. Really didn't want bugs/snakes roaming into the room. Basic things like tissues were not in the room. We stayed there 3 nights and Zebra was served every night - must have got a discount but didn't make the dinners fun. To get to the pool, you need to dodge animal feces the whole way. Breakfast was eatable but no one seemed to get the egg order right. The game ride and guide was good but they weren't going to bring drinks we wanted for the sundowner until my driver insisted. The staff was not trained well and clearly the management cares more about profit than service. Would never, ever stay here again except under duress. Lots of White Rhinos in the pastures.

Ghaub nature reserve is lovely. Only 3 camping pitches. So lovely, private, shady trees, cooling breeze. Spotless ablutions and facilities. Except for the spiders that come out at night in the bathroom! Nice hot water (boiler lit in eve and early morning for us) Big braii area, nice sheltered area. Lovely pool area, and shady seating by reception. Beautiful grounds.

We booked for camping for 2 nights and 2 people in a 4x4 Ute with roof type tent. beautiful little private spot we had. amazing amenities (hot shower, toilet, basin, then kitchen basin and large table). only thing we struggled with was that we were in campsite 2 and it was VERY hard to find a level spot. Our 'camper' was a bit unusual and had a very very high top on it when the tent was lifted so we struggled a bit. maybe a little grading or leveling there would be nice. but we managed and we LOVED it. nice little extra of someone popping down in the early evening to light our fire to heat the water. We did the walking trek AND the driving trek. both were amazing, we preferred the walking mainly because we were out in the elements and literally walking with Rhinos. we walked for about 4 hours and covered about 11km. truely one of the better things we did in Namibia. our guide was happy, knowledgable about everything and had water! we saw Rhinos of course (10 in all), Giraffe, Warthogs, Zebra and others. Highly highly recommend. If you want to see a lot more on this then visit us on You Tube (Look for 'mattbriar' or 'two tiki touring Kiwis')

Belle rencontre

we visited Ghaub this weekend and stayed there for 1 night at the camp sites. the facilities are good. on saturday, we went to the cave and it was fantastic. the guide was knowledgeable and the tour both interesting and fun. its really great and for those, who want to have a proper adventure. you have to be fit, not claustrophobic and reasonable thin to fit through everywhere. really enjoyed it.
